Chapter 7
Son ~ William

On March 29, 1750, James and Agnes had another son, this one named William.  Older brother John was fourteen, Nicholas was eleven, James was nine, Richard was five, and little sister Clary was only three.  The family was growing and thriving at this point.

After he was grown, William joined the rest of his family in service to his new country.  He served as “a private in a Virginia unit.” (Ref. 692)

William married into the Samuel family when he wed a young lady just a few years younger than he, Sarah Samuel.  Her family, including several brothers and sisters, “came from Virginia about the same time that the Wares and others came and were prominent citizens.” (Ref. 1024) They settled in Woodford County during the latter part of the 18th century.  Sarah was the daughter of William Samuel, and her brother, Rueben Samuel, married a sister of Governor Letcher. (Ref 873)

William and Sarah added even more children to the family mix.  Their first child named Samuel was obviously named after Sarah’s maiden name.   He was born in 1775 and married three times.   His first wife was Elizabeth Read; the daughter of Hanson Read.   They were married on June 10, 1801, and lived on a farm not far from Ducker’s Station, a part of his father’s estate. (Ref. 874)

Samuel and his wife had six children before Elizabeth passed away on August 30, 1814:  James Read Ware (1803), Lucy Ware (1805), AgnesMarriageCertificate2.jpg (26830 bytes) Ware (1806), Hankerson Favor Ware (1808), Hankerson Read Ware (1809), William Samuel Ware (1811), and Ann Richardson Ware (1812). (Ref 1024)

Samuel’s second wife was Elizabeth (Bullock) Redd; widow of Thomas M. Redd.  They were married on January 21, 1823, and had one child.     Their daughter, Elizabeth Redd Ware, was born on January 14, 1829.  She married John Benjamine Utterback who purchased a farm near the Mt. Vernon church. (Ref. #75)

Samuel’s second wife passed away in 1833 and he married one more time in 1834.  His third wife was Mary A. Jennings.  Although all his older children were grown and on their own by this time, his last child, Elizabeth, at age five, probably welcomed having a mother again.  Mary died in 1846.

From the eight children born to grandson Samuel Ware, over twenty great grandchildren were provided for James and Agnes.   One of his daughters, Agnes, married Thomas Bullock who resided on the farm now known as the Walker Farm, beyond Mortonsville.  They had thirteen children including a set of twins!  Before the children were grown, they moved to Eureka, Illinois.  Thomas Bullock Sr., on the suggestion of his son, who was also named Thomas, named the new county they lived in after his old home in Kentucky, making it Woodford, Illinois. (Ref 874)

Another daughter of Samuel’s, Ann Richardson Ware, married Captain Elijah Fogg on July 21, 1833.  They had six children: Elizabeth (1838), Samuel (1841), Sarah (1844), Annie (1848), Virginia (1851), and Richard (1853.)  They lived in “a splendid old mansion” in Woodford County. (ref. 1024)  It was called ‘Spring Garden’ and was located seven miles down on Frankfort Road. (Ref. 1024)

WarelandMap2.jpg (57711 bytes)

In The History of Woodford County, the author wrote that the property of Elijah Fogg was “originally part of the holdings of James Ware I.” (Ref. 1024)  Since William was the son who eventually took over the estate of his father upon his death, this would make perfect sense.

William and Sarah Samuel Ware had five other children in addition to Samuel.  On May 30, 1776, they welcomed a daughter named Elizabeth, who they lovingly called Betsey.  As Sarah labored hard to give birth to her second child, Thomas Jefferson was laboring hard over the document that would give birth to a new nation.  The Declaration of Independence was signed just about five weeks after little Betsey’s birth.

At the age of 23, Betsey married John Bacon of Franklin County, Kentucky in 1799.  There were eight children born to them:  Anne Apperson Bacon (1800), Sarah Ware Bacon (1802), William W. Bacon (1804), Dr. James Ware Bacon (1807), Richard Apperson Bacon (1809), John Mosby Bacon (1811), Elizabeth P. Bacon (1814), and Albert Gallatin Bacon (1816).  Their oldest daughter, Anne Apperson Bacon, married Rev. Philip Fall.  He was, at one time, the minister for the Grassy Springs Church.

“Their grandson was the U.S. Senator, A.B. Fall, of New Mexico.” (Ref. 1024)   Betsey and John lived in Frankfort, Kentucky, and she died on July 30, 1849. (Ref. 869, 874, 1024)

James and Agnes got to see another grandson named James Ware, by William and Sarah, born into the family on May 12, 1780, but it is assumed he died in infancy.  Spring of 1783 must have been a tremendous time of rejoicing though.   On April 18th, fighting ceased and the Continental Army disbanded.   The Revolutionary War was over; eight years (to the day) from when it began.   Then, on May 17th, Grandma Agnes Ware must have been thrilled when her first namesake was born.  Sarah gave birth to baby Agnes in a country finally at peace.  Little Agnes married Philemon Rowsey, whose name has sometimes been spelled Rowzee. (Ref. 874) When he passed away, she married William Porter.

Sarah delivered a baby sister for Samuel, Betsey, and Agnes in 1785.  She was named Rebecca Ware and, in 1812, she married Willis Blanton; “the son of John Blanton and Nancy Roberson, who lived near Grassy Springs church, on the Versailles and Frankfort Road. Willis’s father died before 1810 and his mother continued to live on their family estate with the help of at least 23 slaves.   The newlyweds lived on the estate with Nancy and inherited the land from her when the matriarch died.” (Ref. 873)  Willis surveyed the line that separates Franklin and Woodford counties,” and his surveying instruments were lovingly passed on to his descendants. (Ref. 1024)

The Blanton home must have been quite a showcase.  William E. Railey described it as “a farm that adjoined the estate of Rev. Isaac Crutcher, on the summit of a hill that not only commands a view of the ‘Big Eddy’ and its romantic surroundings, but also overlooks all of the hills that surround Frankfort.”  (Ref. 1024)

Willis and Rebecca raised the following children in this lovely home:  John William Blanton (1812), who married first; Elizabeth Ann Samuel; and then Lucy Buck.   They also had Sarah Ann Blanton (1815), who married John Porter.  Another son, Horace Thompson Blanton (1818), married four times.  His wives were Martha Lamb, Eliza Thompson, Mrs. John Kane (Susan), and Henrietta Stevens.

Willis and Rebecca also had Elizabeth Ware Blanton (1821), who married John Y. Mills; Maria Louise Blanton (1824), who married Nathaniel Currier; Agnes Dorothy Blanton (1827); and Rebecca Willis Blanton (1830), who died young. (ref.873, 874)   James and Agnes ended up with many great grandchildren from the offspring of Rebecca & Willis.   John had 10 children, including a set of twins, Sarah had 5 children, Horace had 7 children, and Maria had 7 children.

In 1788, Sarah and William had their last child.  Fittingly, she bore her mother’s name of Sarah.  William was 38 years old and Sarah was 34 at the time.  Sarah married William Porter, Jr.

They, in turn, had a son named Dudley Porter, Jr., who was a lawyer in Paris, Kentucky, and a daughter named Elizabeth who “married J. D. C. Atkins who was a United States Senator and Commissioner of Indian Affairs under President Cleveland.” (Ref. 1024)

When James and Agnes moved to Kentucky, William and Sarah did too.  They “came to Kentucky with other members of the family and settled in Woodford County WoodfordCountySign.jpg (7277 bytes) on a part of his father’s (James’) estate named ‘Wareland.’ Both William and his wife were active members of the Forks of Elkhorn Baptist Church, with many of their other relatives attending there as well.   The Records of the Forks of Elkhorn Baptist Church for 1800-1803 state that in May of 1801 “a meeting was held at William Ware’s.” As with many slaveholders, William also brought his slaves to church and several became members.  In 1800, William Ware’s ‘Cate’ was received by experience and baptism, and in May of 1801, a man named ‘Ben’ (belonging to William Ware) was received by experience.” (Ref. 1028)

William “took charge of the old home, Wareland, after his father passed away” (Ref. 379) and it is very likely a family cemetery was located on the land.  He and Sarah both died in the year 1829, and according to DAR records, William was “buried at Frankfort Kentucky at Wareland.”
